![]() Morella Ads Attack Opponent As sad as it is true, the Washington Post reported this morning that the Morella campaign has launched a new, negative television ad designed to discourage Democrats from voting on November 5th. Pasted below is the lead paragraph and a link to the complete story on this newest, ugly tactic. Van Hollen Supporters Rebuke New, Aggressive Approach By Jo Becker Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, October 19, 2002; Page B04 "Maryland Republican Rep. Constance A. Morella is questioning opponent Christopher Van Hollen Jr.'s progressive credentials, a hard-hitting strategy to sway undecided voters and depress Democratic turnout in the final 18 days of her toughest political campaign." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A49326-2002Oct18.html I am deeply gratified that Mark Shriver has repudiated this new ad, and that he will join me, Senators Sarbanes and Milkuski and Lt. Governor Townsend tomorrow at a rally to denounce these kind of tactics, to rally Democrats to reject negative ads and to begin an effort to turn out the vote in the highest numbers in our history! [Y]ou can help by volunteering on election day to turn out the vote, or you can send in your financial support to help me pay for our positive television ads which focus on the issues! Please go to my website to volunteer or contribute. Thank you for all you have done to bring my candidacy this close to victory. I very much regret my opponent has resorted to this kind of campaign at the very end, but I know that together, we can prevail and we can change the leadership in Congress. Chris Van Hollen [is scheduled to join], Mark Shriver, Senator Sarbanes, Senator Mikulski, Lt. Governor Townsend and the democratic team for a Unity Rally in Bethesda this Sunday [10/20/02]. Statement of Delegate Mark K. Shriver October 18, 2002 Dear Friend of Chris Van Hollen, I am writing to share with you the press statement that I issued today after seeing the new negative television ad from the Morella campaign. After seeing Congresswoman Morella's most recent campaign ad today, I called Senator Van Hollen to reiterate my support for his general election campaign. It's unfortunate that the Congresswoman has chosen to go negative in her most recent ad. The voters of Maryland's 8th Congressional District deserve to see a debate on the issues of importance, not negative ads. I have contributed to Chris's campaign, I have appeared with him at the Metro and I have pledged to do whatever else I can to help him win, and I hope you will do the same.
