Democracy for Montgomery Country's DSM Event
By Mike Hersh, Jul 24, 2005

Democracy for Montgomery Country organizers Sharon Polidoro, Maida Tryon, Elly Shaw-Belblidia and Mike Hersh welcomed welcomed over 100 progressive friends to the Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg, Maryland Saturday, July 23rd. A diverse crowd of all ages shared veggie and regular burgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, and desserts along with conversation about the Downing Street Minutes, upcoming elections, critical issues and plans to keep Montgomery County and the State of Maryland on a progressive path.

AfterDowningStreet.org's Co-Founder and Progressive Democrats of America's Press and Media Team coordinator David Swanson spoke and answered questions about the Downing Street Minutes and the Resolution of Inquiry Rep. Barbara Lee recently introduced demanding answers and documents to explain why the White House wasn't leveling with the American people or Congress in the run up to war.

Maida Tryon held a cell phone to the mic she brought so all could hear an exciting conference call with Rep. John Conyers, former Ambassador Joseph Wilson (Valerie Plame Wilson's husband), and radio hosts Randi Rhodes and Stephanie Miller who discussed the severe damage to National Security caused by White House leakers - who are still at large and unpunished. Some signs in view indicated Karl Rove is the culprit.

Other honored speakers and activists included Maryland State Democratic Party Chairman Terry Lierman, County Executive Candidate Ike Leggett, Director and Co-Founder of AfterDowningStreet.org David Swanson, Director of Progressive Maryland Tom Hucker, Art Fabel speaking as a People for the American Way volunteer, spokespeople for Montgomery County Young Democrats, Teach the Facts, WakeUp Walmart, and representatives of Gubernatorial Candidates Martin O'Malley and Doug Duncan, and County Executive candidate Steve Silverman. Art Fabel asked us to volunteer at People for the American Way (SavetheCourt.org) next week at 2000 M St. Dupont Circle.

Terry Lierman, Ike Leggett, and Tom Hucker discussed plans to keep Maryland and Montgomery County moving ahead. TeachtheFacts.org representatives added new names to their new petition supporting a factual as opposed to backward and superstitious health education curriculum in Montgomery County Schools. It's safe to say everyone learned something and had a great time. The weather was terrific and the facilities were perfect. Thanks to all who attended. To those we missed, see you next time!
