Going Through The Motions Toward Destruction
By Mary MacElveen, Sep 13, 2002

When "We The People" Lost Our Government

After the attacks that befell our once great nation on September 11th, many within our supposed government championed the spirit of patriotism.

I am sorry to say, that our country's patriotism died on December 12, 2000, when every elected leader no matter which party their affiliation, allowed an unconstitutional act to be thrust upon the citizens of this country.

All of you allowed a black-robed mob to stop the vote counting, yet last year wrapped yourselves in our flag. Our flag means much more than that, and many of our brave military men and women have died, and still die in defense of that flag.

As of this moment, all of you are just going through the motions of whether or not to give pResident Bush a formal declaration of war against Iraq. You are prepared to send in our brave military for a cause that you did not back on December 12, 2000.

Many of our military die and will continue to die to make sure that every vote counts. The flag that gets laid upon their coffin as they come back from battle means more to them and we the citizens of this country, then the ones that get hoisted upon our cars, heads, shirts and any other place I can think of.

They have actually done what many of us are not prepared to do, and that is to put their patriotism into action. Did you, my elected leaders put your patriotism into action when it mattered most on that cold winters day? Did you honor the military by doing so? You most certainly did not.

All because of your cowardice to speak out against this action by the Supreme Court, many out here are beginning to live in fear, and anger. We are fearful of what this man, George W. Bush is about to do.

Bush is taking us all into the gates of hell. We live in anger, because you are not confronting Mr. Bush, but going through the motions. Well, we the citizens of the United States expect more dammit.

Are we prepared to face this battle when we are fighting so many battles on so many fronts? Will we have to bring the draft back in order to fight all of these wars for years to come?

Are we willing to send our sons and daughters off to a war that we do not believe in? Are we willing to send them off when our government did not put the tough questions to this administration? Or did you follow Ari's words, "watch what you say"?

If you did listen to Ari, you are all cowards, and that is not what we elected you to do. Also our service men and women fight for the continuity of elections, and not the cessation of them.

They fought for your elections, so why did you not fight for one particular election in 2000? By not fighting for that one particular election, you have dishonored every serviceman and woman out there.

I grew up in an era called the Cold War, when we had air raid drills, and parents kissed their children at bedtime and prayed for a more peaceful world. Now, I am the parent and since Mr. Bush took office and saw what happened to our country last year, I am doing the same with my children.

This man had warnings and did nothing with them. Many of us out here think he should be held accountable for his actions, yet you are not doing so. By him not doing anything with these warnings, many of our brave men and women are going off to war. But, they do so in honor of patriotism.

As I sit here, I remember a song from not so long ago. That song is, "The Eve of Destruction", and that is what I and many others anticipate out here, all because you were just going through the motions, and did not embrace the true meaning of patriotism when it counted on December 12, 2000.

Eve of Destruction
By P.F. Sloan, who was 16 years old when he wrote this:

"The eastern world it tis explodin',
Violence flarin', bullets loadin',
You're old enough to kill but not for votin',
You don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin',
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin',
But you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction."
