Kerry Thank-You Received with Gratitude
Kerry and HershMike Hersh, Robyn Landis, and Karen Bradley write: Kerry Thank-You Received with Gratitude, Our encouragement of leadership makes a difference. In recognition of his efforts to filibuster Samuel Alito's Supreme Court Justice nomination, the Backbone Campaign, Progressive Democrats of America, the Democracy Cell Project and Democrats.com presented Sen. John Kerry one of the Backbone Campaign's official "Spine thank-you" cards.

Democracy for Montgomery Country's DSM Event
Mike Hersh writes: Democracy for Montgomery Country organizers Sharon Polidoro, Maida Tryon, Elly Shaw-Belblidia and Mike Hersh welcomed welcomed over 100 progressive friends to the Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg, Maryland Saturday, July 23rd. A diverse crowd of all ages shared veggie and regular burgers, hot dogs, salads, chips, and desserts along with conversation about the Downing Street Minutes, upcoming elections, critical issues and plans to keep Montgomery County and the State of Maryland on a progressive path.

Build the Base - Don't Abandon It
Mike Hersh writes: Some in the Democratic Party (and a few 'helpful Republicans') demand we abandon our core beliefs and our base in order to appeal to 'the mainstream.' They claim we 'lose' because we're too strong on personal freedom and equality - especially protecting people from government interference in their choice to become parents or not, and protecting minorities from various threats and oppression public and private. They don't understand that we are the mainstream. Most of the polls show most Americans agree with us on most of the issues. But more than that. Betrayal of people who depend upon us - and the principles upon which we depend - would be immoral, unthinking and political suicide. This is not "New Age" or even new. Harry S. Truman and FDR staked this territory for us decades ago. Let's reclaim our birthright as Democrats and build our base - not betray it.

Republicans know something Democrats don't
Mike Hersh writes: "Republicans know something Democrats don't. Unless people feel secure, they will not pay attention to messages about other things. Recent elections proved Republicans' focus on presenting themselves as better guardians of national security than Democrats works. Democrats side-step or finesse this critical issue at their peril."

Congratulations Howard Dean
Mike Hersh called for readers to support Howard Dean for DNC Chair. This was November 3, 2004 - long before he heard anyone else suggest it. Hersh is not claiming he thought of it first, but now that the DNC unanimously chose Dean as Chair he is gratified at this victory for Howard Dean, the Democratic Party, and all Americans who care about American principles and ideals Dr. Dean articulated in his recent speech.

Dear Governor Dean
Mary MacElveen faxed this message to Governor Dean, the DNC and the DLC: There are very few in public life whose words I drink in to gain sustenance, to feel a sense of purpose and where I feel that anything is possible. You are one of those few people, Gov. Dean. I was going to say politician, but that label has been diminished and tarnished in many people's opinion. Frankly, I do not see you as being a politician, only a man who wants to restore good government to the people. No matter who they are. When someone asks me what kind of Democrat I am, the answer is all to clear for me. I simply state that I am a Wellstonian, Gore and Dean Democrat.

Democrats
Dean for DNC Chairman
With Bush's horrible record and our energized electorate, we should be celebrating a smashing victory today. Instead, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and company are laughing at us and picking Supreme Court nominees. There are several people who deserve blame for this squandered opportunity.

Sen. John Kerry tried to straddle and finesse too many important issues, and inexplicably halted his campaign for critical weeks during the summer. His choices and tactics failed to deliver. He rolled over to right wing crimes and dirty tricks. He betrayed the voters in Ohio and elsewhere without a fight. In the end, Kerry was an unworthy choice, as I'd feared from the first.

We cannot do anything about that now. We can and must move strongly forward. During the darkest hour, when Democrats lost their nerve and lost their voice, one man broke through the Bush Amen Corner that dominated the media and the listless impotence in the Democratic Party. One man took brave and honest stands, spoke the truth.

Howard Dean, reminded Democrats how to fight for what they believe. He rejected the anti-American attacks on liberty which equated free speech with treason. He connected with Americans and slashed through right wing double-talk. He showed that the emperor had no clothes, just a sack of hate and lies.

Dr. Dean may be too blunt and outspoken to serve as president, or maybe he's just what we need in the White House. Either way, at this point we need him leading the way in every way he can. Call and write the DNC to demand they choose Howard Dean as Chairman. If you want to take the easy way out, reply to DNC email. Check your in box for their requests for contributions and volunteer work. Assure them that you will never give them either in the future unless and until DNC stands for Do Not Concede.

Saving the Democratic Party from Itself
Mike Hersh writes, The Howard Dean campaign brought a surge of hard-working people and new excitement into the Democratic Party process. It would be a shame to see that dissipate simply because someone other than Dr. Dean will confront Bush as the candidate for President. No matter what anyone says in his favor, John Kerry and excitement do not go together. We cannot let the inertia of the unacceptably moribund status quo continue. The Dean MeetUps and Democratic Party MeetUps provide an avenue to infuse the Democratic Party structure with some pumping blood to reinvigorate if not wash away the dead weight. We should not complain about the Democratic Party when we can become the Democratic Party.

Defying Expectations, Dean Express Keeps Rolling
Mike Hersh explains: After withstanding bitter recriminations from rivals in yet another debate, Howard Dean stands strong. Shrugging off negative press and relentless attacks from right wing talk radio, the Dean Express keeps rolling along.

Even after the entry of General Wesley Clark, polls still show Governor Dean well ahead in New Hampshire. Despite lacking name recognition, Dean is leading in Iowa and among Democrats nationally. Dr. Dean is leading because he appeals to "the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party." Dean also says, "I want to energize the base first. [I] speak to the concerns of those who have always voted Democratic." That's what we need now.

Service to Party and Country
Mary MacElveen xmjmac@optonline.net shares her commentary about efforts on behalf of America: "As a committee member for the Democratic Party part of my responsibility is carrying petitions to get our local candidates on the ballot come November. I find this service to my party as interesting and fulfilling as I find handing out leaflets to voters. That is because it gives me access to them, their feelings or suggestions to our political leaders to deliver better government."

Fighting Behind Enemy Lines
Steve "the Law Dem" writes: It's important to remember that not every Democratic member of Congress comes from a Democratic stronghold. There are very few truly competitive seats left in the Congress. Those few contests will determine which party will control of the House and Senate.

With the GOP poised to take over the whole federal government we need "living" Democrats, not "dead" martyrs. Control of Congress isn't decided in East LA and New York City. It's decided in places like here in the GOP dominated state of Kansas. Here we have an incredibly tough job to do every election. And those of you sitting in safe Democratic strongholds had better hope that we do it well.
