Montgomery County Steps Up
Mike Hersh writes: The Montgomery County, Maryland PDA chapter grew out of MeetUps on several topics, Montgomery County for Kerry, and others groups. We adopted the name The Montgomery County Progress Alliance to promote progressive values, policies, and candidates in our county, state, and nation. We've met each month and fostered cooperation between progressives and concerned citizens.

We'll continue sponsoring events, informing ourselves and the public, lobbying elected officials, and supporting progressive candidates in our county, state, and nation. We've welcomed more candidates to meet with us, held Out of Iraq events in DC and Maryland, and rallied in Annapolis to override vetoes of important legislation. Help us by attending and working on our events, contributing your ideas and financial support, and volunteering with MCPA in 2006. Please visit www.mc-progressivealliance.com. For more information about PDA organizing in Maryland, contact me at mikehersh@mikehersh.com. In other states, see: http://pdamerica.org/orgs/findstate.php

PDA on the Hill - Out of Iraq Press Conference
Mike Hersh writes: When Rep. Maxine Waters closed the Out of Iraq Press Conference at the Longworth Office Building this morning, Progressive Democrats had come of age. This event was part of two days packed with activism, retrospectives and planning, and confirmed that PDA has a new mission. Several members of the House Out of Iraq Caucus specifically charged us and other activists with leading the efforts to force a long overdue discussion of Iraq policy in the House of Representatives.

This is what democracy looks like
Mike Hersh writes: This is what democracy looks like, Progressive Democrats of America and United for Peace and Justice Style. PDA, UFPJ, and a host of progressive allies issued a call to arms, and at least 800 citizen lobbyists from 40 states answered. Activists - almost all still in DC from the mobilization on September 24th - walked the corridors of power demanding their Representatives and Senators stand up against the Occupation of Iraq, and in support of legislation against permanent military bases and "sweetheart deals" the Administration has planned.

Will We Use The Power We Have On September 24?
Mike Ferner writes: All last week I had a rare opportunity - to join several impressive speakers on the "Bring Them Home Now" tour's northern route. Al Zappala, whose son was killed in Iraq last year; Tammara Rosenleaf, whose husband is due to deploy to Iraq this fall; Stacy Bannerman, whose husband has already served a tour in Iraq; Carlos Arredondo, whose son was killed during a second tour in Iraq; Elliott Adams, former Army paratrooper in Viet Nam; and two Iraq war veterans: former Marine, Michael Hoffman, and Cody Camacho, former Army Specialist.

At each stop I was with them: Detroit, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Amherst, and Boston, we explained what motivated us to be on the tour. We condemned the war and ongoing occupation. We urged people to attend the massive demonstrations planned for September 24-26 in Washington, D.C. In each city I saved part of my five minutes to go beyond urging participation in the march and rally on the 24th, and plead for people to consider participating in the civil disobedience planned for the 26th as well.

[PDA] July Political Report
Kevin Spidel National Political Director of the Progressive Democrats of America writes: It has been another busy month for Progressive Democrats of America. The grassroots have been mobilized from coast to coast on issues ranging from the Downing Street Minutes to ending the occupation of Iraq to CAFTA. There is no rest for PDA as the machinery of the right-wing agenda continues to sink to new lows. In this letter, we want to inform you of the work we are doing at the national and local level in regard to coalition building and supporting our progressive friends on the Hill.
