Recently, the economics editor of Fortune interviewed Bush regarding his taxation plans and summarized his findings in a few words: Bush wants to end taxation on income and move taxation to purchases.
Nobody likes to pay taxes, but we recognize we must as and in exchange for living in a free society. As part of our social contract, we have a reciprocal obligation to pay something back. Obviously, not everyone feels that way. Including those who sit at the very top of the economic ladder, such as our resident in charge.
Shifting the tax burden onto purchases as Bush intends would be disastrous for most Americans, especially those on the lowest rungs of the economic ladder. The richest have already paid for their toys, so they would be taxed as little as working poor families, while enjoying far greater benefits. This is the most regressive form of taxation ever.
According to the interview, the process has already begun. Bush’s efforts to abolish capital gains taxes and the estate taxes -- which only effect the few wealthiest already – would lower Bill Gates’ tax bill to less than yours! Bush is pushing hard for almost no taxation of millionaires and billionaires, claiming that this single taxation is double taxation.
Some outstanding millionaires with a sense of moral obligation – including Bill Gates Sr. -- explain Bush’s tax the poor and enrich the rich policies would devastate America. Obviously, that doesn't concern Bush’s family and backers who will not be satisfied until they pick our bones clean.
When the question was proposed to Bush, he said that he had no intention of changing the tax rules at this particular time. The interviewer took issue with Bush using the political device of 'at this particular time' in order to hide what he considers to be his true intent which is to obfuscate the entire issue until it becomes a looming reality.
These are some very clever and devious people, folks, who don't mind saying anything to keep us off guard and compliant. So far, according to the editor, it looks like rewriting the tax laws is a high priority for the Bush administration. If it happens, we will all be in big trouble; yet, it seems that no one on our side of the aisle is breathing hard about it; nor will middle of the road Republicans talk this up.
Certainly -- with the exception of a few honest, decent editorial writers -- we won't hear anything from the media about this issue. The latest threat to the solvency of this country. Not to mention what it would do the middle class and the working poor. The suffering this would inflict on those who dropped through what’s left of the safety nets -- which seem to be woven out of tissue paper – is beyond measure.
Pushing almost the entire tax burden on those least able to pay, so the wealthy elite can pay almost nothing. This is just the travesty Bush is pushing while the rest of us remain distracted by threats of terrorism and plans for war.
Bush is dismantling this country while counting on -- even increasing -- our sense of insecurity. The Bush Occupation remains confident we are too frightened to utter a syllable in our own defense. Manipulating our fears to get their way. It makes you wonder who the real terrorists are....
