Democrats

America On Death Row

To: The Senators in the Democratic Party
December 28, 2002

As I write this letter to you, I feel like America is on death row. December 12, 2000 she was sentenced to death when the United States Supreme Court decided -- against the majority and the Constitution -- our president would be George W. Bush.

We have all been told to get over it, but I am sorry we cannot. This decision was much bigger than Al Gore, because it undermined our democracy. Something our nation was always heralded for, where many gave so much to even have a taste of freedom. This damaged what America offered to those willing to work hard to achieve it.

Many in our armed services gave their lives defending our democracy. This decision meant their lost lives meant nothing to those who did not defend democracy within our government. I must tell you that many join me feeling you failed to make the call to the governor sparing our nation this final fate.

That call should have been made by all of you, the top elected Democrats because America was innocent. She did not deserve this fate, or the aftereffects that we have all felt when our presidency was handed to the wrong man.

Many of you might be asking yourselves, why is she writing me yet again? Or why does she write to us period? I will let you all know of why I write constantly to many if not all of you since George Bush seized the presidency. It is because I want to know: Where is the Democratic leadership -- not only in the Senate but the House as well?

I write because I care about my country deeply and chose to get involved to help form a more perfect union. Do I see that perfect union ever since George Bush came into power? I most certainly do not.

Do I see a nation under siege? Yes I do. Do I see anyone willing to come out and openly defend our nation against his maddening policies? There have been some, but not nearly what is needed. Every heinous piece of legislation that he wants passed, gets passed. Even if it goes against what you promised your constituents.

You were elected to push past any fear, and to lead. Not follow blindly. Many like me believe there is something to fear when Bush wants something. If that is the case, you have no business in that elected office.

Remember, our government is supposed to be about checks and balances. Will we ever see the day that our government practices these checks and balances? I hope so, but for right now, I am not holding my breath.

I am not a rich person financially, so any and all correspondence with you costs me money. But, I am a rich person in my beliefs that we can do better. Also taking time to write many of you, get involved in campaigns, and reach out to others costs me time away from my children. But, I do so for their future and the future of other children growing up in our country.

So, when I see inaction by my party, it gets me very angry. I was once a Republican as many of you know, but when I saw them no longer representing the people to the best of their ability,

I chose to switch my party affiliation to Democrat. I can thank two great people for opening my eyes to what was happening -- President William Jefferson Clinton and Vice President Albert Gore Jr.

Some gleefully say the Clinton/Gore era is over, and that makes me angry. I do not like the era we are now living in. I would give anything to have the Clinton/Gore era back. I want my country back and I keep wondering: where are my Democratic leaders? Why do they acquiesce instead of fight for the little guy?

America was supposed to be about "we the people," not "we the powerful". But under the Bush administration only the powerful get what they want, the little people be damned.

Vile legislation including the unfair, counterproductive Bush tax cut, The USA Patriot Act, The Iraq Resolution and the Homeland Security Act are like lethal injections into the arm of America. Who will call the governor? Who will stop the execution of free America?

Now, we face an impending war in Iraq and possibly North Korea. Thanks to Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's idiotic remark we can take them on too. They have sent us dangerous signals. When will you place the call to the governor demanding clemency?

Many of you put on a uniform to defend your country, yet the so called Commander in Chief shirked his duty and went AWOL in our time of need. Are you willing to trust him with the lives of our American soldiers? Are you willing to trust his judgment when it comes to the safety of the American people?

Are you going to let him get away with the systematic murder of thousands of innocent Iraqi men, women, and children? Would you put on a uniform knowing he was your Commander in Chief? Would you sacrifice your sons and daughters to fight his battles?

Each day and night, I pray for someone, anyone to tell the truth and come to the rescue of our innocent America. I am praying for some real leadership by my party. I was hoping that it would be Al Gore again, but he received no support from anyone in the Democratic Party, and this angers me.

So, I am now literally pleading with all of you. Will you come to the rescue of an innocent America? The call needs to be made to the governor's office immediately.

SOS,

Mary MacElveen
